About:
Lindsey Cope was directing the University of South Carolina Women’s Chorus and had asked me to write a piece for the singers around the #metoo movement. Not identifying as a woman myself, I asked the singers to provide me with prompted responses or open-ended poetry/prose on the topic. When Lindsey handed me a stack of written responses on notebook paper, I took them home and began reading. Needless to say, I was in tears within minutes. I paired their texts with the Dies irae text due to the anger and sadness I read on all the slips of paper. My mother also had her own untold journey with assault, so the topic was close to my heart. Later, I set the work for TTBB voices for the Twin Cities Chamber Singers who partnered with the Sexual Assault Victims’ Memorial ion Minneapolis to create a virtual choir piece.
